HISTORY OF WEST SHORE CHRISTMAS HAMPER FUND SOCIETY

 Introduction

The Goldstream Food Bank under the direction of Julie Darby was the first organization to provide food for the less fortunate in the Western Communities during the 1980’s.  The Food Bank was a small operation located in a Provincial Forestry Building where Veteran’s Park is now located in Langford.  In 1988 the Service Clubs of the Western Communities formed an organization called JDF Xmas Happiness Fund.  They were the first to deliver a Christmas Hamper to the less fortunate.   The organization was granted charity status. Subsequently in 1990 the name was changed to the Western Communities Christmas Hamper Fund.   Society status was granted in 1997, and another name change to West Shore was granted in 2005.  Today the operation is run by like- minded people of the community.  The Service Clubs are now providing some of the support services to assist in the delivery of the hampers either through donations and/or as volunteers.   The Society has grown in stature and is now able to provide an Xmas meal consisting of food, toys for the children, and gift certificate for the purchase of a turkey, or other meat products. A gift certificate is also issued to children ages 12 and over to purchase an Xmas gift.

 Operations

The Society under the direction of President Gayle Ireland is co-located with the Goldstream Food Bank in the basement of the Legion on Station Road, Langford. Each year the Society will administer up to 700 hampers within the community.    The Society ramps up in Oct and Nov each year accepting applications for an Xmas Hamper. The applications are sorted into four groups: “A” Hamper consists of a single person, “B” Hamper consists of two people, “C” Hamper consists of three people, and “D” Hamper consists of four or more people.  Starting in December every applicant is advised the date when to pick up their hamper.  Food is either purchased, or donated with a large portion of the food coming from Xmas drives such as Belmont School twelve thousand item drive, Construction Association of Truck Operators Parade, Fire Dept, and a majority of the Schools in the Sooke District. Individual and group donations of food and toys also form a portion of the donation.  CFAX Santa Anonymous provides a great deal of the toys for the children.  Of course the Society relies on the gracious giving of the public, businesses and volunteers to donate money and time for the purchase of gift certificates and food.  This year we are extremely gratified to have major contributors Serious Coffee, Original Joe’s, Six Mile Pub, and Pacific Fleet Diving Unit assisting the Society with a Turkey Run fundraiser.

  Delivery

The Society has been able to obtain sufficient volunteer help to ensure a smooth delivery of the hampers from the food bank to the recipients.  It all starts with the delivery of food either by donation or through purchase, to sorting and stacking shelves, to packing the “A to “D” hampers over four consecutive nights and the issuing of the hampers and toys the following days.  The week before Xmas is extremely busy for the Society. Each hamper is brimming over with food and fills a grocery cart.  It’s enjoyable to witness and often brings a tear to the eye.
